How to check if you are blacklisted by CRB in Kenya

You can check whether you are blacklisted by CRB using one of the three CRB agencies licensed by the central bank of Kenya. That is metrópol, credit info and Transunion. It’s entirely up to you to decide which agency you will use to check your CRB status.

First thing first, let me clarify one burning question.

How long does it take to be removed from CRB blacklist?

Évén if you have cleared your loan, your name and credit record will still remain on CRB database.  Therefore there is nothing like completely clearing your name from CRB since your credit record will show that at one time you defaulted to repay your loan.  But your status on CRB will be updated showing you have cleared your loan.

So CRB works in such a way that they collect and store information on how you borrow and repay your loans from different lending institutions. All that information is stored on your credit report.

So when you want to borrow a loan from a financial institution, they will pull your credit report from CRB to check whether your credit score is good and if you qualify to get a loan.

So this information about your credit history will always be there on CRB. I hope I have clarified enough.

So hów do you clear your name from CRB after being blacklisted?

Being blacklisted on CRB means you have a negative listing status report and that you cannot apply for a loan on any other credit company.  To change that. You need to repay the loan you defaulted.  The credit company that listed you will send updated information to CRB that you have cleared your loan.

How long does it take to be listed by CRB?

It takes 90 days for banks to list you and 30 days for mobile lenders to forward your name to CRB after which you will be notified that you are going to be listed if you don’t make any payment on your loan.

Consequences of being listed with CRB in Kenya?

First and more obvious is you will not be able to access loan services. Secondly,  you may not be able to get government jobs since they may require you to have a CRB clearance certificate. Lastly, your loan will continue to accrue interest if you don‘t pay.

Without further ado,  lets me show you how to check if you are blacklisted by CRB in Kenya for free using the Transunion Nipashe app. In my opinion, this is the best method but you can try accessing CRB services using other agencies.

1.Download the app on google play store or app store.
2. Sign up by entering your first name, second name, ID number and phone number.
3.Accept the terms and conditions and click Next.
4. The app will Immediately check your CRB status.
5. If you see ‘Good‘ you are not blacklisted but if you see “Poor” then you are a loan defaulter.

If you want to check your credit report, credit score, loan accounts or get a CRB clearance certificate,  first you need to activate your account by paying Ksh 50 to pay bill number 212121  and use your ID as the account number. Once your account is activated, you can access other services at specified fees.

And that’s all. That’s how you check your CRB status using the TransUnion Nipashe app.
